Clifton Hall, Nottingham
GI, Smythson, remodelled in early C18 and again by Carr of York, c1778-97, with minor early twentieth century alterations; in institutional use since the 1950s and now empty

Issue
Proposal to subdivide interior, extend on the footprint of a 1950s building and build housing in the grounds.

Our view
Objections raised to the degree of subdivision, the extension and the housing development.

Result
The subdivision plans were modified to our satisfaction and the extension dropped. The house was sold in mid-2005 to another developer and the housing development remains a strong likelihood.

Guy's Cliffe, Warwick
GII*, originally c1720, substantially extended 1751-7 perhaps by William Hiorn, several later additions and alterations

Issue
Proposed total demolition for hotel development, without submission of financial or structural justification.

Our view
While the interiors had largely been lost, much of the shell remained intact and had recently been stabilized, at some expense, after an accidental fire. It could certainly be sympathetically and imaginatively reused as part of a new development. The local authority ought not to have registered the application without any form of structural appraisal or other justification for demolition, without effective marketing and without any design drawings of the proposed replacement building.

Result
Application withdrawn.
