Moggerhanger is one of Soane's masterpieces, showing off as well as
anywhere his virtuosity as an architectural dramatist and manipulator
of space. The house was sold to its present owners in 1994 for just £1
after the previous owner's conversion plans proved unrealistic. At that
time, damaged by hospital additions and at risk of new development in
the grounds, its future was far from assured. Now in the hands of a
preservation trust, Moggerhanger is not only safe – it is revived and
reborn, thanks to an exemplary restoration programme from which it has
recently emerged.
